The Brooklyn based tropical synth duo, Tanlines, comprised of Jesse Cohen (see:  Professor Murder) and Eric Emm (see: Don Caballero) delivered stunning sounds at the April Making Time Event at Voyeur.  On this Friday the 13th, there was nothing scary about what was played on stage.  Shimmering guitar highlighted familiar dance hall beats and the crowd was worked into a frenzy.  Packed deep, we were treated to amazing calypso and South African beat tinged euphoria.  Tanlines played songs off both their 2012 and 2010 releases and it was fantastic.

The set was highlighted by fervent bongos and soothing vocals characteristic of the Tanlines catalog.  We enjoyed every minute of it and only wished for an encore.  That withstanding, Tanlines are a mind blowing act that will alter your state of consciousness and take you to inner worlds undiscovered.  Check out some video from the night below and head on over to the Tanlines website for more info.

Niki & The Dove delivered a magical light-filled performance at the making time event @ Voyeur nightclub on March 9th.  Originating in Stockholm, Sweden, the Sub-Pop signed duo of Malin Dahlström and Gustaf Karlöf have been around in their current configuration since 2010.

Niki & The Dove deliver Pop music outside the realm of traditional over-production and corporate tweaking.  It is a pure and raw electronic pop sound that is on the precipice of even greater US popularity.   You can cop their new album out May 14th.

Check out a few of our vids from Niki & The Dove’s performance below.  They played about 5 songs and we got video of two of them:

Philly is lucky this year.  It gets to see Bear In Heaven at least twice in 2012.  We have been looking forward to seeing them since we heard You Do You two and a half years ago.  The Brooklyn based band formed by Jon Philpot plays an experimental, psych-synth, indie rock medley and is damn hypnotic.  Bear In Heaven was playing this Philly show at Voyeur on March 9th prior to their SXSW jaunt and they made it count.  Tracks were delivered with the same sound as captured on wax and the show was wildly engaging with Jon coming into the audience and dancing while also playing multiple instruments and singing.  Joe Stickney, and Adam Wills laid down guitar and drums seamlessly and the entire set piece was brilliant.

With their most recent album, Bear Rest Forth Mouth, getting some best new music honors from Pitchfork we know the critics realize the power in Bear In Heaven’s music too.  On the back of this release will come I Love You It’s Cool, their fourth release since 2003.  We look forward to this and Bear In Heaven’s May 2nd performance at FUC in Philly.  Cop your tix here.  We did (plus Blouse off Captured Tracks is opening and they are simply fantastic).  Check the Bear In Heaven vids:

UK-based bombshell Charli XCX made her first US appearance at Voyeur for Making Time in Philly on March 9th truly an amazing event.  Delivering an energetic performance capable of exciting a stadium crowd on the Voyeur main stage, Charli killed it.  Everything positive you’ve heard about the rising star is true and we were there to witness in amazement.

Creating an experimental dark pop blend with a dancey beat, we found falling for her and sound facile in practice.  Charli’s on-stage presence is engaging and capacious. She and band will continue to grow in popularity there is no doubt.  We feel extremely fortunate to have had Charli XCX come to Philly first and are sure everybody in attendance felt the same.

Not content to move solely about the stage, Charli came off the elevated platform and into the audience with passionately delivered verses stirring the crowd into a frenzy.  She moved about with purpose donning a spiked bracelet,  black mid-drift and black pants singing each lyric authentically into the mic.  Running through a number of tracks, Charli delivered the show everyone wanted to hear and man was it brilliant.  They say a picture is worth a thousand words but the videos below are worth a million.  Check them out:

The once clouded in mystery quartet from Manchester, England – WU LYF – played Voyeur Nightclub in Philly on November 5th.  Ellery James Roberts (Vocals, Organ), Thomas David Francis McClung (Vocals, Bass, Guitar),  Evans Kati (Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica) and Joseph Louis Harland Manning (Drums, Piano) incensed the crowd to frenzy with their Indie Post-Rock assault leaving no one untouched.  A show charged with immense energy from beginning to end, the WU LYF set was one for the ages and a true pleasure to witness.

Caught in a sea of people we watched as the band delivered songs as good as those pressed in studio and for some it would have been hard to tell the difference.  Whether or not this was concert-drunkenness talking we can’t be quite sure.  What we do know was that a giant WU LYF sign was perched prominently in the DJ booth.  Ellery had a sweet jean jacket on with the WU LYF detail emblazoned on the back.  They came with lights and graphics which were projected onto the screens above the main floor.  Smoke hung in the air as people lit up inside the club (smoking allowed) and was defrayed by the constantly moving beams of light from the venue’s light system.  Crazy stuff guys.  Add to that the sounds of WU LYF and this thing was classic.

We could go on about the band but instead present a series of videos we took from the pit as the masses swarmed and WU LYF dominated the stage:

Philadelphia got an early Christmas present in the form of the late addition of Crystal Antlers to the November 5th show at Voyeur nightclub.  The Long Beach, California 4 piece put on a mind blowing set this night having traveled from Brooklyn in a battered tour van and finishing the trip inside that same van being towed by a tow truck.  The group as no worse for wear playing their brand of Indie Psychedelic Rock and surely winning over many fans who were not previously familiar with their work.

Crystal Antlers is currently made up of Johnny Bell (bass/vocals) , Andrew King (guitar), Cora Foxx (organ) and Kevin Stuart (drums).  They are an eccentric group having morphed from a trio to their current lineup (losing one member, gaining two or three more depending on the day).  Crystal Antlers evolved during their stint as chimney sweeps and received their name from their boss during that time.  Continuing to grow, they have put out 4 albums since 2008 and trace their origins back to 2006.

The November 5th show was a piece of amazing showmanship with Johnny Bell reminding us of Kurt Cobain if he had been born 18 years later.  Cora Foxx was a great addition to the group and offered up funny antics by bringing dressing room decor on stage in the form of an electric lamp which he proudly displayed on top of his keyboard during the set – hilarious.  Andrew King was an axe-murderer on stage with impressive guitar solos.  Kevin killed it on drums leaving no doubt the Crystal Antlers were tougher than their name suggests.  Taken in it’s entirety, the Crystal Antlers added a component to the show that would have been missing in their absence.  A grunge meets 10’s psych flair.  In no way, shape or form should you ever miss one of their shows if you have a chance to go.  The Crystal Antlers are f*cking amazing.  Here is some video we shot from the evening:
